I needed to see who was at each machine, so I added a folder called people to the images folder. If you put a jpg of each your users in this folder, then their image will be displayed in place of the "two shirts" image that appears on the ldap_details page. If the folder doesn't exist, or the users image doesn't exist, you still see the default image.

Your HR department may well already have a bunch of suitable pictures.

To use this feature, create a sub folder in your images folder, and put jpeg images in there, with the same name as the "displayname" of the people.
For example, if the displayname is John Smith, the the image should be called images\people\John Smith.jpg (including the space).

Next I intend to create a similar folder called equipment, and put pictures of all of the machines in this. (OK I may "borrow" a few from Google Image).

Ooo...I like this idea. At my last job our intranet site had everyone's pic on it and it was really helpful in seeing what they looked like before running off to help them with their computer issue, as I knew immediately who I was searching for.

Now how to coax HR/Security into giving me the pictures

Chad, did you get the pictures?

Has anybody else had a chance to try this feature yet?

I was thinking of adding the images and ldap details to the RSS feeds, so as new software scrolls across the bottom of my Firefox, I can mouse over the items and see who has been installing things they shouldn't have, complete with email address and phone number so I capture them.

I like it. The only thing I'd be wary of is using the users displayname as the image filename. It's possible to use characters in the displayname that would be illegal in a filename.

Cheers, Nick.

Yes, I should really "tidy" the displayname and make it url-safe, but I hadn't spotted that potential issue. Will add that asap, in the meantime be aware that anybody with a ' in their name may break the image, so John O'Conner wont work, but John OConner will.

Well, I know where the pictures are now but they are all stored in an odd format ".pc extension" and they are not named in a logical fashion. So currently I don't have the time to sort some of them out and give it a try.

A nice feature would be to have a small "edit" button under the picture and clicking it would be similar to the edit button that allows you to link monitors to different PC's. Only with this the edit button could let you upload/specify a different picture to associate for that displayname.

Added in two options for pictures of the equipment.

The simplest is like the people pages, but will rely on you having an image of every model of machine in the equipment folder. I think it slightly spoils the clean look of the system page, so I may drop the idea.

A slightly less direct option is the additional link under the warranty links which will do a Google Image search based on the Manufacturer and Model.

I like this better as it require no extra effort to set up. It doesn't help me with my idea of improving the Inkscape diagrams by using pictures of the equipment however.

Could the .pc pictures be .pcx pictures... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCX

Worth a try... BTW I bet the Gimp would be able to work it out.... http://www.gimp.org/ 8)

Yeah, I think that's the format. I just dread having to convert a whole bunch of pictures and sorting through them all since they aren't named logically =/

Strage to say, the photos I had to use were all named completely illogically, must be an HR thing," give them all random names (Jame000.jpg Fred_McLumpher.jpg DSC00001.jpg intranet000.jpg ) and the like, 'cos WE in HR know who they all are..." Think its a power thing :P
