I would personally like to see better (advanced) search functionality.

Examples include:

Search for an item, but choose which additional fields to show.

Is this something that is being enhanced in OAv2?

Thanks

Jason

I haven't gotten that far yet (thinking about Search).
Can you elaborate ?
I was just going to search every field in every table, and return the result, along with some detail about the result and the system it links to.

IE - Search for "mozilla" would return the "software name", the "software timestamp" and the "system name"...

Can you refine your idea and post it here ?

Not sure about jsingh,

But I was thinking of a advanced search page...

That allowed you to key on certain items.

Like OS, ServicePack, LastReboot, etc ,etc...

Multiple search items you coulud select from drop downs or input boxes that kind of gives the user the ability to create their own custom query dynamicaly.

Actually this is what I am envisioning also.

Another item I need to see on all searches are the Manual Entries field. I use these fields right now for:

1. Machine/Item location
2. Machine/Item status
3. Purchase date

I believe Item 2 should be a pull down menu option for all systems (audit.vbs & nmap.vbs detected items).

Another thing I notice is that Other items need to have the same fields so we can do a proper join query to display all items (audit.vbs & nmap.vbs) for a comprehensive view of the inventory in a company.

Well, thinking about this a little....
I suppose a large part of what you are requesting would be taken care of in the "Groups" functionality of OAv2.
There is the ability to define a Group based on any field in the DB (and it updates dynamically).
I see "Groups" as being search queries that you wish to run "all the time".
Define the search as a group, and it automatically shows up on any "list systems" type pages.

I see a "search" as being more a "one off" type of thing.
Really, I see any search returning the machines on which it has a match. This would be the standard "system list" type of page.

Thoughts ?

Sort of...

List all of the machines using List All Audited Systems, use the magnifying glass fill out the sub-string you want in one of the boxes, so for example if all of your Accounts workstations are called Accounts(something), put accounts in the hostname field.

I think this would be something fun to work on for OAv1 before OAv2 comes out...

The idea I was presenting is like this from another project (OCS Project).

What is neededed?

Basicaly one php page with alot of code... Could start out small and then grow..

Say if you started out with 5 options to search from
BIOS Manufacturer
BIOS Version
Computer Name
and Domain

You would create the 5 queries in the php code. Each query would have different variables of = < > to allow for the additional control in the search.

Its just a matter of starting from somewhere... Not sure if anyone is interested in something like this or has the time to start coding it.

I know this image is taken from another project, but I think OA is much better and a search function like this would be badass... Anyone else sought need for something like this?

Looks like you are trying to build a SQL query builder... Microsoft Office Paperclip can help you build a SQL query builder, would you like Microsoft Office Paperclip to help you build a SQL query builder.. (Blue screen, reboot etc).

Surely you are trying to do something which has been done before (in PHPMyAdmin and OpenOffice for example). Can we not look at the code for an existing solution, rather than re-inventing the weel?

Not in the slightest, I think its a great idea, I just think we could save ourselves a lot of effort by seeing how other apps have done this. For example, if you look in PHPMyAdmin, you can select database fields and build queries, you can also do this within Open-Office (take a look at the Database options, and see the OA Help menu).

I think this would be a neat feature, 'cos in effect you could use it to build your own viewdefs. I'm think along the lines of a wizard type page similar to the setup page, where you choose a name, and fields to create your own viewdef, which appears in a User Defined views menu.

Am I allowed to post code from other projects, even if they are open source?

You would need to check the license of the other project.
If it's an OSI approved license - yeah, no problem.
