Post subject:  Using phpBB

Well, I am sick and tired of deleting spam posts.
I hope you all cannot see them - they come in at a rate of ~30 / day.
Using phpBB is not ideal - it doesn't stop them from signing up... at a rate of ~200 / day.
I am thinking of something that uses OpenID - that might slow them down a bit.
There is no current, updated OpenID auth for phpBB that I can find.
Hence - does anyone else have any suggestions for a way to run the Open-AudIT discussion board ?
It doesn't even have to be a forum.
I tried mucking about with Wordpress and allowing people to sign up (using an OpenID plugin), and be able to create posts that others could then comment on. Uses tags instead of phpBB's forums.
Try it here - http://markunwin.com/
Feel free to sign in / sign up and let me know what you think.
Seemed to work OK, but it has some drawbacks.
Something like Stack-Overflow would work well - voting is cool !

It has to be free (unless you want to pay for it).
Preferably run on Linux (my hosting is on Linux, I can admin Linux, etc, etc).

I was thinking even further ahead of a "project" type website that would have sections like this...

"Learn More..." - brochure pages
"Blog" - wordpress, blogger articles
"Discuss" - stackoverflow
"Features" - uservoice, ideatorrent
"Help" - stack overflow
"Bugs" - stack overflow + other fields - status (new, verified, fixed, duplicate)
"Documentation" - like codeigniter + PHP manual style user comments/additions to each page + versioned
"Demo" - installed demo version of OAv2
"Download" - releases, trunk
"Statistics" - accept "in OAv2" report of how many and what types of devices. Show stats.
"Example Reports" - for download
"ChangeLogs" - auto generated from Bazaar commits
"F.A.Q" - wordpress, blogger articles

But in an "all-in-one" package. Yeah right, this does not exist - I know. I could code it in my spare time - yeah, right. Sigh.

Anyone have any thoughts and/or suggestions ?

You can do a lot of that with Drupal. You will have to use a bunch of modules, but it is a powerful CMS, and there are a ton of user created modules for just about everything under the sun.

I have been (again) playing about with WordPress.
Would you mind taking a look at http://markunwin.com, registering and posting.
What do you think ?
Would this do initially - at least to get us away from phpBB ?

Mark,
Thought I would give this a try, understand all too well about the spam menace.
Went to the site and the Register option.
e-mail - I can do that.
Open-ID - grrrr not a fan. However in the interests of Open-Audit I click the link and go to register. Hooray I can use my company Gmail. Have to use my "profile URL". Never knew I had one but I persevere. My profile is minimalistic, I'm not a social (web site) animal but there at the bottom is a url. Paste that in. "The address you gave isn't an Open-ID server or endpoint"or some such message.
Stuck.
Now yes, I can sign up for full Open_id and so on but all I'm (long-windedly) trying to say is that the barrier to entry is rather high to attract new rather than already dedicated Open-Audit fans.

Regards,
John

Hey John,

Thanks for the effort.
Open-ID is supposed to be easy. Damn.
I could make it the same as phpBB - just "sign up", but I'm worried about spam then.
Why would it be different to here ?
I thought Open-ID would make it harder for the spammers, really...

Any other thoughts about what I could do ?

Mark,
In the it's-a-small-world department I ran into another site yesterday that also gave me an Open-ID and/or Google/Yahoo etc. logon option. As well as an Open-ID button they had direct Google/Google Docs/Yahoo buttons which took me directly to entering my Google logon and all went smoothly from there. I don't know what it takes to provide that link but it seemed to provide a much better "user experience" for the process. Maybe you could look into that.

I think Open-ID is fine. I used my Yahoo id and everything worked the way it should. Though I don't like the fact that I was stuck with the user name it gave me. Oh well.

I think everyone by now has account at one of these providers: http://openid.net/get-an-openid/ so I don't think it limits anyone, and considering Open-Audit's users tend to be a little more tech savvy, if there are issues I think they can figure them out.

Just my 2 cents.

Done. I have now activated the "OpenID Selector" plugin.

Yep - it's a PITA.
Will see if I can enable name changes - but I don't think it's possible.

FWIW, I am currently reading up on Wordpress.
The more I read, the easier it seem's that the above "requirements" could be implemented. At least for the following:

    Learn More..." - brochure pages
    "Blog" - wordpress, blogger articles
    "Discuss" - stackoverflow
    "Features" - uservoice, ideatorrent
    "Help" - stack overflow
"Bugs" - stack overflow + other fields - status (new, verified, fixed, duplicate)
"Documentation" - like codeigniter + PHP manual style user comments/additions to each page + versioned
    "F.A.Q" - wordpress, blogger articles

Anyone wanna start another project ?!?!?

Mark,
That worked well, no problems with registering. Now all you need to do is add those few items in your recent post :D

unable to register openid using my wordpress account. Can't get past this screen:

WordPress.com
You do not own that identity.

No problems actually logging into my wp account, I'm just unable to use that to connect to openid and register at your site.
