Hi Everybody,

I have been playing about (getting some things done - work has settled a bit - no more 60 hour weeks).....
Here are two scripts to audit Ubuntu and Fedora machines. They will only generate a .html file at the moment - insertion into OA will come later.
Download them, mark them as executable, and run them from the command line. You don't need root (sudo) to run them.

Could anyone give it a go, and let me know of any errors. I have tested it on my 6.06 and 6.10 machines. Seems OK. I have tested the Fedora script on a Fedora6 box.

Worked fine for me on a Ubuntu 6.06 Server and on Debian 3.0.

On every Debian/Ubuntu server we have, the hal commands your script uses aren't there on a default install. I needed to do apt-get install hal

Used the Ubuntu version on 2 machines running V7.04 Feisty (desktop) and had this error display:
[quote]lshal.c 186 : INFO: called LIBHAL_FREE_DBUS_ERROR but dbusError was not set.
error: libhal_device_get_property_type: org.freedesktop.Hal.NoSuchProperty: No property storage.serial on device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_244b_scsi_device_lun0_0_storage

The script continued and produced a report. I tried the "hal" install mentioned by Scott but it said I already had the most current version.

Looking at the report (these are oldish HP e-pc42 machines) it seems to detect a second hard drive, "/dev/sdb" of zero size. This may be a small unformatted/unallocated area of disk outside the main (and only) partition.

The completed report looks fine except for that drive problem.

**Later Update**
On further checking the report I found that the CD-R drive was not found. I think this is where the error arose and the "extra" drive was just the unallocated space.
