Post subject:  [help][solved] Laptops group

I have activated my Laptops group a while back and I know we have about 43 laptops on the network however the Laptops group says 0. I have tried clicking the Update button.
After a number of searches I have determined some search terms that are unique to laptops "Lenovo, notebook, portable" however I can't pull up a definitive list of laptops.
I have both Open-AudIT v1.0.3 and v09.03.17 running at the same time and when I click on Queries > All Laptops in v09.03.17 I get the complete list of laptops.

Thanks!

The Laptops group filters based on the (manual entry) Class field which doesn't look like it gets initialized with any audit data so you have to fill it in yourself.

Option 1: Use the Workstation Details report - Form Factor field to filter for your laptops. Then bulk edit them and set the Class field to "laptop". The group should now have these machines. You'll need to keep the Class field updated yourself.

Option 2: Edit the Laptops group definition (or create a new one) and change the filter from man_class to form_factor or man_form_factor. If the audit gets the form_factor correct it should work automatically. If you've got laptops with the wrong form factor then you'll need to fix them manually.

Yep, what JPA said.

Just one thing to add. When the audit script retrieves the form_factor field from WMI, this is not necessarily consistent. I've seen notebook, laptop and docking station in there. If your laptops are all the same brand they will likely be reasonably consistent and you could alter the Group definition and probably be OK.

Personally I prefer the first approach. Manually marking them. Combine that with activating and checking the "Unclassed Computers" Group. Any computer you have not manually assigned a class to will automatically show up in there. Run a details report, sort by something appropriate and bulk edit. I used this approach on a database containing over 7,000 systems and it was quick and painless. You simply need to keep an eye on the Unclassed Computers Group and assign any as they appear in it.

Thanks for the help however I don't understand why v09.03.17 works so well at identifying the laptops automatically. Is it possible to add that capability to v1?

The previous version attempted to use this field, with some success. You could create a Group based on this as per Option 2 above.
