Hi.

I need to know which would be the recommended hardware for running Open-AudIT, for the audit of thousands of systems (between 4.000 and 12.000), in terms of CPU, RAM and hard disk.

Would MySQL be able to manage this?

I was thinking about:

CPU: Pentium IV 2,8 or better
RAM: At least 4GB
HD: At least 20GB

The OS will be Ubuntu 6.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Regards.

How will these systems post to the database, how frequently do you require to audit them?

We have planned to put the audit script in the NETLOGON folder of each Domain Controller, for all the machines to execute it in each logon. So it will be executed daily.

Now we think we may have a bandwidth problem, because each script results are 250KB size. Is there any way to compress it locally, and then decompress it on the server for the load?

Maybe a random sleep time before the sending?

Thanks again in advance.

Regards,

The app doesn't compress, so no, unless the workstations all have 7zip on them (in which case you could write a batch script to zip and submit the results to a central location and another to decompress them and send them to the server).

Adding a random sleep statement would be relatively simple, but the random nature of logging in would probably cover the issue providing of course you have a fairly large pipe to submit the results down in the first place.

Total bandwidth = (approximately (250Kbytes (i.e. approx 2500K bits)) * number of workstations /(time take to submit)

Could be an issue... you might like to trial it first.

In OAv2 (not that this will help you yet), I have a script that copies the audit to the systems, then run's it locally. There (will be) an option to also copy GPG.exe and encrypt & compress the result before submitting it. It's not quite finished (the copy + run remotely works), I need to finish the GPG stuff...

That would save bandwidth (compress) and eliminate the need for HTTPS (GPG encrypted).
