Hi, I have OpenAudit on a customer domain, and it seems to be that all the Dell PCs have the same Windows XP Pro key listed in OpenAudit. This seems like a bug. Is there any way to get the _actual_ XP key, the one that's on the sticker on the side or bottom of the PC? Is this a bug, or is it due to how Dell pre-installs XP?

Thanks.

John

Pretty sure this is just how Dell images their PCs. I don't think the key on the case is ever useful, other than as proof that it is licensed.

If the key looks like XJM6Q-... then it is the standard Dell XP Pro key. Look at the WINNT.SIF file in the i386 folder of your install CD for the full code.

The issue is with pre-installed machines, or ones installed from a manufacturers recovery CD.

These CDs are mass produced for the manufacturter, and therefore identical, but will only install on the same manufacturer's PCs. They rely on a "tatoo" in the bios to prove the machine is from that particular manufacturer. This is why if you try to use a recovery CD from a Dell, on say an HP it wont work. It will however often work on an entirely different machine from the same manufacturer.

They all have the same key pre-coded on the CD. The SIDs and UUIDs once installed will be different however, as these are generated from unique features of the PC such as Mac address, serial number of CPU, system board serial number.

See here for a similar thread.
