After the upgrade my field I created was gone?

I had to recreate it which lost data.

What needs to be backed up for added fields?

The upgrade (if run through the web interface) should most definitely NOT remove any custom fields.
Was the field/column in the 'system' table or the 'sys_additional_fields_data' or 'sys_additional_fields' table(s)?
A little more info would be good.
